Puritalia To Debut 965 hp Hybrid Berlinetta in Geneva

A 965 hp Return to the Spotlight

The Italian automaker Puritalia made a splash with its 427 roadster a while back, and now it has a new car. The Berlinetta is coming to the Geneva Motor Show should put the automaker back in the spotlight for at least a short period of time. Why? Because it’ll make 965 hp and be a hybrid, sticking with the times.

Also, Puritalia is no slouch of an automaker. Its 427 roadster was no joke, and we don’t expect the upcoming reveal in Geneva to be either. The company builds custom vehicles by hand and makes them beautiful and exceedingly fast machines.

The details for the upcoming model were scarce. Puritalia didn’t let slip much, but it’s enough to get us interested. There are four photos of the upcoming car perfectly shadowed to intrigue you but not actually give anything away. Otherwise, the company said the car’s “SuperHybrid” powertrain would make 965 hp and be managed by an artificial intelligence system. The car will also have a total carbon fiber body.

Puritalia will make only 150 versions of the car. Each one of them will be built to order. Just to finish the carbon fiber Puritalia says it takes 800 hours, which is more than many supercar manufacturers spend on an entire build. That likely means this car will be very expensive. What exactly that price will come in at, has yet to be determined, or rather Puritalia has not released the price.

Lexus LC 500 Inspiration Series Appears in Chicago

The Third Lexus Inspiration Series Model

Lexus has a new Inspiration Series car in the LC 500. The vehicle appeared at the Chicago Auto show and showcases the limited-edition version of the car. The vehicle is a beautiful example of the car with Flare Yellow paint and a $106,210 price tag excluding destination.

Lexus will build only 100 examples of the LC 500 Inspiration Series. Those lucky buyers will have a truly unique version of the car. The yellow paint is new for the model and special 21-inch wheels help accentuate the car’s curves and creases in ways no other LC 500 variant has done before.

Inside, Lexus placed special yellow door inserts made of Alcantara, semi-aniline leather seating with yellow stitching, and yellow stitching around the center console and glove box. Additional touches include carbon fiber door sills with a special inscription for the model and a Lexus garment bag that folds into a travel bag that matches the car’s aesthetic.

The vehicle is powered by the same 5.0-liter naturally aspirated V8 that makes 471 hp and 398 lb-ft of torque. It can move the rather heavy car from a standstill to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds.

The performance isn’t at all different than the regular Lexus LC 500 coupe. However, the unique touches to the car for the Inspiration Series make it a car worth noting. We doubt Lexus will have much of an issue selling the 100 versions of the car. Its uniqueness should help it be a boon to collectors and those who were already considering an LC500 but wanted something a little special.

Jaguar Adds Checkered Flag Edition F-Type to Honor Racing Heritage

Will This Special Edition Jag Race Into Your Stable?

Jaguar unveiled its latest special edition F-Type with the Checkered Flag Limited Edition. The car features special touches designed to harken back to Jaguar’s long racing heritage. The company specifically points to the XK 120 from 1948. The version of the car is available in both coupe and convertible models and you can get it with four or six cylinders.

The Checkered Flag Edition F-Type is based on the R Dynamic version of the car. From there Jaguar paints it in Caldera Red, Fuji White, or Carpathian Gray and adds a black contrast roof to all coupe models. Additional exterior features include 20-inch black wheels, red brake calipers, and black extended side sills. Ian Callum, Director of Design at Jaguar, said the following about the purpose behind these changes:

“In creating the Checkered Flag Limited Edition we’ve focused on details which enhance the presence of the F-TYPE and promise of performance – and in doing so, made a fitting celebration of 70 years of beautiful, fast, Jaguar sports cars.”

Jaguar put many special touches inside the car, including Ebony Windsor Leather on the standard performance seats, dark brushed aluminum trim on the dash, the InControl Touch Pro infotainment system features a Meridian audio system, and a Checkered Flag emblem embossed on the headrests.

Power is unchanged from the regular versions of the car. The 2.0-liter turbocharged engine makes 293 hp and the 3.0-liter supercharged version makes 380 hp. Pricing for the Checkered Flag Limited Edition starts at $72,925 for the four-cylinder coupe. The convertible costs $75,325. The V6 coupe comes in at $95,525 and the convertible starts at $97,925.

EU Regulations Delay TVR Griffith Until 2020

EU Makes Things Tougher for TVR

British carmaker TVR has a new Griffith sports car, and it looks awesome. That car will take a little longer than originally thought to go to production and be cruising around on European roads. According to the Dutch publication AutoRAI, the company will have will have to push back the car until 2020 due to EU regulations.

Carscoops reported on the Dutch publication’s findings and noted that the cause for the delay was the fact that the Welsh government owns a tiny percentage of the company. Despite the fact that only three percent of the company is under Welsh government control, TVR qualifies as a state-funded company. This means it needs to take EU-bids on the South Wales factory renovation before production can begin.

Image from TVR

“It takes more time than we expected to start production, thanks to the rules of the European Union. We are now aiming for a market launch in the course of 2020,” said Heritage Director of TVR, Paul Thompson. Judging by Thompson’s responses to journalists, he sounded understandably annoyed with the rules.

When the TVR Griffith does finally hit roads it will be a serious performance sports car. It looks amazing and has a Ford-sourced 5.0-liter V8 under the hood. The mad scientists at Cosworth also got their hands on the engine. TVR says it will make 500 hp and all that power will go to the rear wheels. The car will only weight 2,755 pounds, meaning it should go like a rocket. The car’s 50-50 weight distribution and sporty suspension, brakes, and tires should make it a force to be reckoned with.

The Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86 Will Get Another Generaiton

This Coupe Isn’t Done Yet

There were rumors that the Subaru BRZ and the Toyota 86 would disappear after the current generation’s lifecycle was up. Both companies said that these rumors were false. Carscoops reached out to both companies and got a definite no from both Toyota and Subaru. This is good news. It means the 86 and BRZ will live on in a new generation.

Subaru was very clear. “We are moving ahead with a next-generation Subaru BRZ, but have no further details at this time,” said Subaru USA spokesman Ron Kinno.

On the Toyota side of things, the 86 should receive a new generation with Toyota’s Gazoo Racing giving it some upgrades and special treatment. That could seriously change the car. How is unclear, but what is clear is that neither car is going anywhere.

What Will the Next Gen Be?

With that cleared up, we now have additional questions and can guess at some of the answers. Both car companies will continue selling their coupes into another generation. This means that they will likely be co-developed again. It would be dumb for Toyota or Subaru to go off on their own to make the cars at this point.

The vehicles are produced at the same facility, and it would just cost a lot of money to go off and do it on their own. This would make sense for a super high-seller but not a low-volume, low-selling sports car like the BRZ or the 86. What’s interesting is if the companies make the cars more powerful and generally better overall is that, in Toyota’s case, at least, it could steal sales from the new Supra. Subaru, on the other hand, is safe. It only has one sports car.

Fans of the car have been asking for way more than 200 hp, and I would expect the BRZ and 86 to deliver. It could be interesting to see how high the companies decide to go. The car should punch up the ante in every way, but if it does so, it could get into a whole to level of competition. With the limited details at this point, it’s unclear where Subaru and Toyota will take the model.

2019 McLaren Senna

Successor to the P1, Tribute to a Legend

When it was first unveiled in late 2017, the Senna proclaimed itself as the ultimate street-legal McLaren. We can go back as early as the 1990s when tracing the Senna’s lineage, with the McLaren F1 pioneering the first production car with full carbon-fibre construction. More than two decades later, its predecessor – the McLaren P1 – gave the British automaker a refreshed sense of supremacy with its redesigned flagship car.

Fast forward into the current era of automobiles, and the Senna epitomizes a collaboration of the latest and greatest technologies, while paying tribute to a legend of the past – not so much to a car, as much as it is to a driver; none other than the late F1 driver Aryton Senna. The Brazilian’s namesake is shared with the car as a salute to his tenure as a McLaren Formula One driver. Though he is not with us anymore, one would be confident stating in his place that this is an automobile that Mr. Senna would be proud to have named after him.

2019 McLaren Senna

The McLaren Senna is the pinnacle of McLaren performance. It combines the three principal matters of a high performance vehicle – aerodynamics, chassis and power – in an unrivaled manner. As a purpose-built track car, it still manages to be road-legal; but don’t expect to have a chance encounter with it at any race tracks or on the street.

Due to its spartan interior and physically demanding nature, the car precludes mostly any sense of ‘daily use’ and will require an experienced and capable driver behind the wheel to push the car over seven-tenths on a road course. The car is also a bit of a unicorn with all 500 units having been spoken for.

With a starting price of $959,000 USD – for better or for worse – we are all unlikely to see owners braving the perils of a potential trackday incident or a fender bender in a mall parking lot. The cars are inevitable collectors items, and will be mainly limited to brief cameos at posh private gatherings and events, while their value continues to appreciate.

McLaren’s marketing team accurately sums things up, stating “The McLaren Senna is the personification of McLaren’s DNA at its most extreme, creating the purest connection between car and driver. It is the most track-focused road car we have ever built, and it will set the fastest lap times of any McLaren to date. That is what has driven us to build a track car that is unashamedly without compromise. One that is legalised for road use, but not sanitised to suit it. Nothing else matters but to deliver the most intense driving experience around a circuit.”

Features & Highlights

Engine and Performance

The McLaren Senna is powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.0L V8 engine which produces 789-horsepower @ 7,250 rpm and 590 lb-ft of torque at 5,500 rpm. With its lightweight and mid-engined-rear-wheel-drive layout, the Senna predictably provides its occupants with head banging acceleration via its 7-speed SSG dual clutch transmission.

While characteristically high revving in nature, the car still packs plenty of punch in the lower range as it surges forward towards peak power in a linear (not to be mistaken as boring) manner. With launch control enabled, the rear-driven car is able to achieve 0-62 mph in 2.8 seconds, 0-124 mph in 6.8 seconds, and complete the ¼ mile in 9.8 seconds and can reach a top speed of 211 mph.

Chassis, Design and Aerodynamics

With its dry weight of just 2,641 pounds, the Senna is the lightest production car McLaren has made since the F1.  At the core of this ultra lightweight design is McLaren’s state-of-the-art carbon  fiber Monocage III chassis.  This is an improvement over the Monocage II version used in the 720S thanks in part to a repositioning of woven, stitched, and sheet-molded sections which provide the chassis with strength, rigidity, and lightweightedness while providing the canvas for the exterior design elements required for the flagship hypercar.

Speaking of such design elements, we can refer primarily to the Senna’s aerodynamics. Having the luxury of direct access to a world leader in aerodynamics – McLaren’s F1 Team – it’s no surprise to see many of their technologies amalgamate with their production vehicles. The Senna is equipped with an active aerodynamics system which can produce up to 1,764 pounds of downforce at 155 mph.

2019 mclaren senna

With the help of elements such as an enormous rear wing, rear diffuser and an array of ducts and splitters, the Senna generates 40% more downforce than the P1 model it replaces.  “The advantage a road car has over a racecar that has to conform to a rulebook is that we can use active aerodynamics,” Ian Howshall, McLaren’s Product Manager for the Ultimate Series explained.

Even under the most extreme g-force inducing situations – such as threshold braking at high speeds – the active aerodynamics ensures the car remains balanced by tempering the undesirable effects of significant weight transfer. In this scenario, downforce over the front axle is reduced while downforce over the rear axle sees a large relative increase. “Our computer controlled active aero will take care of this with precisely the right amount of transfer.” The mapping will also alter the downforce going into, through and out of a bend, optimizing stability and mechanical grip on the driven rear wheels”, Mr. Howshall iterates.

The Senna is the beneficiary of equally impressive suspension technology thanks to McLaren’s RaceActive Chassis Control II suspension, which has evolved from the P1’s setup. This suspension links the dampers laterally and longitudinally to manage both roll and heave. The system also lowers the car closer to the road in Race mode; by 1.5 inches in the front axle and 1.2 inches in the rear. Making contact with the tarmac are Pirelli Super Trofeo R tires (245/35/19 in front and 315/30/20 in the rear), while six-pot monobloc alloy calipers and carbon ceramic discs provide enough stopping power to bring the Senna to a standstill from 124 mph in just 100 meters.

2019 mclaren senna

In contrast to its extroverted exterior, the interior is notably spartan and stripped down to accommodate less in order to get more. “Less” in this case would be refinement and comfort, and “more” would be unadulterated performance. Depending on where you order your car, you will be provided with either a left or right hand drive configuration – McLaren decided to go this route in spite of some earlier prototypes having a centrally located drivers seat, like the McLaren F1.

2019 mclaren senna

Verdict

Hypercars in general are difficult to compare anything else to, as they are by nature, cars that effectively create and exist in their own class. The McLaren Senna is no exception, and even though other hypercars such as the Bugatti Divo make claim to being a “rival” of sorts, the Senna remains in a league of its own.

In my opinion, if anything were to rival the Senna, it would come from within McLaren’s own lineup. The 600LT is widely perceived to offer a large majority of the Senna’s performance and characteristics at a fraction of the cost, while the 720S is the pragmatist’s choice when it comes to having the best all-around car.

In spite of the McLaren Senna’s unworldly performance, it is not the car you would get for its bang-for-buck or inherent value. The car will be owned by those where money is no factor, and ultimately it is destined to become more of a status symbol – with the goods to back up its claims but rarely with an opportunity to display its true power.

As the halo car for one of the world’s leading supercar producers, this is perfectly fine as the Senna fulfills its purpose of being the conduit which broadcasts very explicitly, McLaren’s prowess to the rest of the automotive world.

McLaren 570GT MSO Cabbeen Collection Comes to the U.S.

The Year of the Pig Car Comes Stateside

McLaren built the 570GT MSO Cabbeen Collection as a China-only model. The company made five of the cars that appeared at the 2018 Beijing Auto Show in China. Now, there is a sixth car that made its American debut at the Lunar New Year: Year of the Pig celebration in Los Angeles.

McLaren Special Operations and Mr. Cabbeen, a Chinese fashion designer teamed up to build the bespoke models. The cars feature unique Chinese design elements and have a special Obsidian Black paint job that also features dragons in Gloss Speedline Gold paint on both door inserts. Additional exterior features include new 15-Spoke GT wheels. The wheels and brake calipers are finished in Gloss Speedline Gold paint.

Inside the cabin, the car gets McLaren Special Operations defined carbon sill covers. There’s Alcantara material throughout the cabin and Mr. Cabbeen added beautiful dragons to the center tunnel and rear luggage area. The embroidered dragons were made using Chao Embroidery, which McLaren notes is a technique that’s part of China’s heritage.

One of the most special features of the car is that its VIN number and the VIN numbers of all the collection’s cars end in 888888 to commemorate the Lunar New Year: Year of the Pig. From a performance standpoint, the model has not received changes or updates. The car comes with a twin-turbo 3.8-liter V8 that makes 562 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. The First Bugatti Chiron Sport Delivered Is Beautiful in Blue and Black

After About 11 Months of Waiting

Abdulla Bin Fahad from Qatar recently took delivery of his Bugatti Chiron Sport. According to GT Spirit, it’s the first one that the car company has delivered to a customer. As you can see from the images, it’s a blue and black breathtaking example of the hypercar.

The unique blue color is the dominant feature of the car, and it’s absolutely vibrant both on the exterior and interior of the car. The blue is offset by the black accents. Actually, the rear of the car features a unique dark carbon fiber finish that contrasts nicely with the blue. However, if you look closely at the rear, you’ll see small blue accents that really help make the car special.

Inside, the blue motif continues. The seats, headliner, dash, doors and most everything is blue and beautiful. The contrasting color inside the car is a unique bronze on the center console, steering wheel, control stalks, door handles, and other small accent pieces. There’s also a special ABF badge inside the door jam that stands for the owner’s name.

Bugatti unveiled the Chiron Sport almost a year ago at the Geneva Motor Show. Production of these bespoke machines, highly customized for individual owners take months to complete. As 2019 moves forward, we can expect to see more of these special Chiron Sport, and we’d image each one will try to outdo the last.

The Chiron Sport puts out the same amount of horsepower and torque the regular Chiron does, but it weighs less (around 40 pounds). Bugatti achieved this by adding even more carbon fiber to the car.

Acura Honors the 30 Year Anniversary of the NSX Debut in Chicago

The Shot Heard ‘Round the World

In 1989, Acura debuted the NSX supercar and changed the automotive industry. The NSX, then debuted as the NS-X Concept, changed the way people thought about supercars. It came with world’s first all-aluminum monocoque chassis, had titanium connecting rods, and was built to a different standard than the competition. It was the first exotic supercar from Japan and the first supercar you could easily drive daily.

To commemorate the 30-year marker, Acura celebrated the car in Chicago and put together a video. It features the first NSX and the most recent iteration. The commemorative video hits the high points of the model’s debut and showcases some seriously beautiful cars side by side.

Acura had several different influential members at the Chicago Auto Show to discuss the NSX and its impact. Jon Ikeda, Vice President and General Manager of Acura, was there when the NSX first hit the world stage.

Before NSX, it was always assumed that supercar performance came at the price of a comfortable interior and everyday drivability,” said Ikeda. “NSX shattered those notions, and raised the bar on every other exotic and supercar maker, with the effects still felt today. NSX was a huge inspiration and one of the major reasons I was drawn to join Acura nearly 30 years ago.

The current generation NSX carries on the original car’s mission. The car pushes the performance envelope with a hybrid powertrain and Sport Hybrid Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive. It has a hybrid twin-turbocharged, mid-mounted V6 engine. It can also operate in full EV mode, and it’s the only supercar built in America.

Acura shows no signs of slowing down, and that’s a very good thing for enthusiasts everywhere. It will keep making the NSX better. Hopefully, in another decade, Acura will celebrate the 40-year anniversary.

W Motors Fenyr Supersport

If one takes some time to reflect on the origins of the supercar as we know it Italy, Germany, France, England, and of course the United States immediately come to mind as homes. These nations have the deepest roots in creating the most sought-after, exotic and timeless automobiles in the world.

Occasionally manufacturers based outside of the big five like Sweden’s Koenigsegg quickly become the stuff of legends but this fame is rare indeed. W Motors aims to create its own legacy starting with its own interpretation of what defines a supercar.

The Wolves Den

Established in 2012 by Ralph Debbas, W Motors (the W stands for “Wolf”) is the first exotic car manufacturer from the Middle East. Initially based in Beirut Lebanon before moving to its current location in Dubai, Debbas company has taken a modern approach to its production.

Using its own expertise and leveraging partnerships with long-standing industry leaders like RUF and Magna-Steyr W Motors created the Lykan Hypersport in 2013 (Featured in Furious 7), following it up with the Fenyr Supersport in 2017.
